Going to H%$# in a Handbasket - 1 Timothy 2:1-4

In a recent news poll, nearly 60% of the people who responded said that the current state of our country was:  Things are going to H%$# in a hand basket!

(I couldn't help but research where this phrase originated. It means "Things are rapidly deteriorating - on course for disaster," and is thought to refer to the use of hand baskets in catching the severed head of a person being guillotined.)

I supposed if one were to look at the overall state of things, not only in the US, but the world in general, one would have to agree with the poll! It seems to me that nothing our government does, or any other government for that matter, is able to affect the rapidly deteriorating situations that the world faces.

That's why Paul's admonition in his letter to Timothy is so applicable to us today:

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,  for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-4

For one thing, our leaders are in desperate need of wisdom, and regardless of whether we agree with them or not, we should be praying that they will make wise decisions. The problems our leaders face go way beyond politics, people's very lives are impacted. So as Christians, let's commit to praying for our leaders.

Second, there is a reality that we must face up to:  No matter how good our leaders decisions are, we cannot save the world, because of the fact that this world is on a collision course with the biggest reality check in history: The rise of the one-world government of the Anti-Christ, and the return of Jesus Christ. Folks, our ship is going down, and we shouldn't be wasting our time trying to save the ship, we should be helping people get to the lifeboats!

We can't save the world, but we CAN save people, by sharing the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

"Lord, help me to keep my focus on your desire that all people would be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth."

Pastor Clay
