| | Want what you have - 1 Timothy 6"6-8 Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can't take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. 1 Timothy 6:6-8 I was watching a documentary the other day that described how a great shift took place in our country right around the turn of the 20th century. Up to the early 1900's, the main focus of the population was working to obtain the necessary means for survival; Production was the main goal of most families. People were content if they had food, shelter, and clothing. Yet with the dawn of the industrial age, and the introduction of the automobile, the culture began to shift to a consumption model. And so began the consumer mentality, where the primary focus became obtaining "things" that would make life more comfortable. Food, shelter and clothing are now assumed. The problem is that no "thing" is ever enough. We get a "thing," and it makes us happy for a short time, but then the thrill wears off, and we need a "new thing." Contentment will never come by getting more things, it's a never ending cycle. It's been rightly said that the key to contentment is to "want what you have!" True contentment is found when our hearts are rooted in eternal things; putting material things in their proper priority next to spiritual things. Contentment is a byproduct of living with an eternal perspective. "Lord, help me to keep an eternal perspective today, and not get caught up in the next "new thing." Pastor Clay | | | | | | |
