| | Build the walls near your house - Nehemiah 3:28 In the book of Nehemiah, we're given the account of a man named Nehemiah who led a team of people to rebuild the walls of the city of Jerusalem. When the Babylonians sacked the city, the walls were torn down, and now that the people were returning from captivity, the walls were going to be essential for protection. Nehemiah showed wise leadership by assigning parts of the wall to the men of family's that would live near that section of the wall: Each one repaired the section immediately across from his own house. Nehemiah 3:28 Why did he do this? Because he understood what motivated people, and if the city were ever attacked again, those men wouldn't want the weak point in the wall to be the spot beside their house! Those men were likely to take extra care and build those wall sections strong enough to hold off future enemies. It's not so different today, in that we have enemies that we want to keep out of our house, they're just enemies of a different sort. Our enemies don't ride horses and carry spears. Our enemies today are things like pornography, worldly philosophies, false teachings, or friends that would lead our family astray. So it's just as important to build the walls around your home to be tall and strong. Instead of rocks and mortar, our walls consist of keeping tabs on what our kids are watching or listening to, what internet sites they go on, what teachers our family is exposed to, and who we allow our family to fellowship with. And just like the men on Nehemiah's team, we should have great motivation to make the walls near our home strong and secure. Keep in mind, this doesn't mean we become reclusive Christians, hiding in our bubble, as Jesus said we would be "in" the world but not "of" the world. "Lord, help me to build solid walls around my home that will keep them safe from enemy attack." Pastor Clay | | | | | | |
