A Far Greater Power - 2 Chron 32:7-8

In 2 Chronicles 32, the Assyrian King Sennacherib invaded the Northern Kingdom, and as his army moved south he sent a message to King Hezekiah:

"Surely you must realize what I and the other kings of Assyria before me have done to all the people of the earth! Were any of the gods of those nations able to rescue their people from my power? Which of their gods was able to rescue its people from the destructive power of my predecessors? What makes you think your God can rescue you from me?  2 Chron 32:13-14 NLT

Obviously Sennacherib was confident, and he had good reason to be; the Assyrian army was the largest and best equipped army in the world at that time.  So what was Hezekiah's message to his people?

"Be strong and courageous! Don't be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria or his mighty army, for there is a power far greater on our side! He may have a great army, but they are merely men. We have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles for us!" Hezekiah's words greatly encouraged the people. 2 Chron 32:7-8 NLT

See, Hezekiah had a secret weapon, the Lord God was on their side! Sennacherib's army was big and bad, but they were merely men. When Sennacherib finally reached Jerusalem, Hezekiah unleashed his secret weapon; He and Isaiah prayed, and the Lord sent a single angel that wiped out the entire army (vs 20-21).

But you ask, "what does that have to do with me?"  A lot, because we too have a large army sitting right outside of our gate:

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places Eph 6:12

Our enemy, the Devil, is a liar, and he seeks to kill and destroy: He wants to destroy your life and your family.  He wants to imprison you with sin, and keep you in a pit. And, he loves to mock you when you fall.

But just like King Hezekiah, you have a far greater power on your side: The Lord Jesus Christ!  Friend, your bible is full of promises from God that through His Son Jesus Christ, we HAVE overcome:

In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16:33

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Roman 8:37

Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:5

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4

So the next time it feels like the Assyrian army is camped outside your gate, cry out to the Lord, pray the promises of God, and watch as the Lord enters into the battle on your behalf, and the victory will be yours, in the Lord!

"Heavenly Father, thank you for the promise that you have given me through your Son Jesus Christ, that through Him I have overcome the world, the devil, and my flesh."
