| | False Teachers Part 3: The Simple Man - Romans 16:17-18 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. Romans 16:17-18 In my last two posts we discussed the three ways we can identify a false teacher; They teach an altered gospel, they use smooth and persuasive words, and they serve themselves (read Part 1 HERE and Part 2 HERE). Next Paul tells us who a false teacher will target: A false teacher will "deceive the hearts of the simple." Now Paul isn't saying that some Christians are stupid. The Greek word he used is "akakos," and it means "innocent, or harmless." In other words, this is someone who is very open, who trusts anyone, and who believes anything. Paul is describing the Christian whose heart is in the right place, but because they haven't been immersed in the bible sufficiently to discern truth from error, they can be easily deceived by false teaching. That's why it's important for pastors to teach the bible (Acts 20:27). That's why its important for Christians to study their bibles (2 Tim 2:15). You can listen to messages that help you practically, or read books that help you help you mentally, but only the word of God will protect you providentially: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Tim 3:16-17 So friend, when it comes to knowing your bible, don't be a simple man; When you know the truth, you can't be deceived! Tomorrow we'll look at our final line of defense against error - learning to be wise in what is good, and simple in what is evil. Pastor Clay | | | | | | |
